The Insanity of the Sun

I see NASA's STEREO satellites have managed to capture a 3D image of the sun, capturing it from both sides. It's a pretty massive feat when you think about it. All the science and maths and calculations gone into pulling it all off. Giants on the shoulders of giants.

What really got me thinking though was the reality of the Sun itself. We all see it every day (cloud dependent), feel its warmth and are aware of its importance. But we never really reflect on it. There is a massive ball of fire in the sky far away that we are completely and utterly dependent on. Lets take a second look at that sentence. 'massive' is an understatement in the greatest sense of the word. It is more than 100 times bigger than our planet. It's a meganormous star floating in space. A ball of gas and fire that has been burning for roundabout 4.567 billion years. A long time considering its still burning.

What really overwhelmed me when I realised this was just how small, insignificant and transient we are as an organism. The universe is so much bigger than all of us. Our civilization is no more than a blink of the solar system's eye.

That said, I don't feel its as bleak as some make it out to be. I feel we are a part of the universe, and as soon as our corporeal existence runs its cycle, we return to the whole to which we belong.
